„Constitutional Days“ Conference

„The relationship between national law and European Union law - XIV Constitutional Days“

Košice, October 2 - 3, 2025

The event was attended by František Mozner, President of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic; Marcela Kosová, President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic; Maroš Žilinka, Prosecutor General of the Slovak Republic; Róbert Dobrovodský, Public Defender of Rights; Takis Tridimas, founder and director of the Luxembourg Centre for European Law; Pavel Šámal, Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic; and Miroslav Gavalec, Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union. The conference also welcomed distinguished public figures, members of the academic community, and experts from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland.

The first day of the conference was held in the courtroom of the Constitutional Court. Discussions focused primarily on the obligations of the Slovak Republic arising from its membership in the European Union, recent case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, similarities and differences in fundamental rights protection in the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights, as well as recent constitutional amendments in Slovakia in relation to the conference’s main theme.

Ivan Fiačan, President of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic, emphasized that the relationship between national law and European Union law is dynamic and constantly evolving. He noted that, to ensure its proper application in constitutional jurisprudence, it is essential to maintain an ongoing professional dialogue with all relevant stakeholders, particularly legal experts and representatives of the judiciary.
