Graduated in 1976 from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in Bratislava. Prior to his appointment to the Constitutional Court, he worked in the Institute of State and Law of the Slovak Academy of Sciences as scientist, then chief scientist and chief of the Civil and Commercial Law Department.

Author of several scientific monographs, including "The Scientific-technical Development, the Law and the National Economy" (1991), "The Juridical Cultures of Asia and Africa" (1991), and "The State and the Law in Service of Environment" (1993). He was also joint-author of the monographs "Modern Medicine and the Law" (1982, 1988) and "Court Judgements in Medical Lawsuits" (1992). He has also published 80 articles in professional legal journals in Slovakia, Botswana, France, Holland, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, and the United States.

He was appointed a Constitutional Court judge on January 21, 1993.
