He studied at the Faculty of Law of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. After graduating in 1978, he worked as a lawyer in the corporate sphere. In 1980 he passed the rigorosum examinations at the Comenius University in Bratislava and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Law. He worked as a corporate lawyer until 1990. After passing the bar examinations in 1991, he started to practice law in Košice, focusing mainly on commercial and civil law.

In 1993, in addition to his legal practice, he began working as an external advisor to the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic. He performed this function until his appointment as a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic.

He became a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic on 4 July 2002.
