After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Comenius University in Bratislava in 1977 he acted in the judiciary, first as a judge-in-waiting and from July 1980 as a judge at the District Court in Banská Bystrica. He held the office of the Vice- president for criminal matters.

His orientation is criminal law and especially criminal proceedings and the field of basic human rights and freedoms. He has also been a member of several legislative and recodification committees for criminal law, he has published articles in legal journals, as a lecturer he has educated judges and taken part in several short time studying tours abroad (in the Netherlands, Canada, France, Estonia, Bulgaria).

He was appointed a judge of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic on January 22, 2000.
